CityAxis forms Threshold Initiative to tackle DDA liabilities

Kim Ridge and Eoin O'Callaghan's sponsorship of UKCAE (UK Council for Access and Equality) is a prime example of social entrepreneurship ~ where the success of a venture is measured in terms of impact on society rather than merely its profit.

UKCAE was founded in the spring of 2006 to provide business with practical solutions to the obligations faced under the Disability Discrimination Act. The UKCAE Pathway is a 3-step process that will provide awareness, understanding and knowledge that will enable any organisation to work towards inclusion. The Pathway is unique in that it will be approved by UKAS (United Kingdom Accreditation Service). Founder Members who have already signed up to UKAS and who will commence working through the Pathway in the summer include The Association of British Insurers, the British Retail Consortium, Postcomm, legal firm Martineau Johnson, the National Policing Improvement Agency, the mental health charity Together and West Berkshire Council.

In December 2006 the Disability Equality Duty came into force under which 45,000 public organisations have further pro-active duties to actively promote equality for disabled people. In February 2007 the Government's Equalities Review stated: “The Panel believes that public agencies should require suppliers to adopt the same principles under which they themselves are required to operate.” The private sector can no longer afford to ignore disability inclusion: UKCAE provides a logical and clear path to follow.
