CityAxis delivers Carbon Garden pavilion at Kew Gardens

In November 2024 CA proposed to RBGK an alternative proposal to deliver this exciting new carbon garden project. The plan being to design coordinate, manage and construct the Mizzi designed pavilion for delivery 18th July 2025. The specialist CND design manufacturers: Xylotec (timber), 2D3D (Flax canopy) and Lundhs (Norwegian Stone) worked within the very complex Rhino 3D design package. With CityAxis guidance and instruction, the fabulous Mizzi design was evolved into a workable solution for delivery within a tight programme. In conjunction with this process CityAxis parallel employed five distinct engineering companies to provide, the intellect and guidance on the various and distinct engineering principals of this unique structure.

Under CityAxis guidance and with the continued involvement of Mizzi a realistic and practical project was realised.

“Unveiled in July 2025, the Carbon Garden at the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, combines striking horticulture and innovative design to highlight carbon’s vital role in sustaining life on Earth (Dezeen, 2025). At its centre stands a fungi-inspired pavilion by Mizzi Studio, constructed from low-carbon materials and designed to harvest rainwater for the surrounding rain garden” (FT, 2025; The Glossary, 2025).

“CityAxis provided design management, technical detailing and construction delivery, working closely with Mizzi Studio and partners to realise the pavilion within Kew’s broader narrative of nature-based climate solutions” (MSN, 2025).

“The garden features over 6,500 plants, 35 new trees, and a range of landscapes – from wildflower meadows to an exposed coal seam – all curated to demonstrate how plants and fungi store carbon, boost biodiversity and aid climate adaptation” (The Glossary, 2025).

“In all my time at Kew Gardens, and in the 43 years that we have developed some major projects, I have never experienced a contractor as good as CityAxis.”
