Refurb & conserve Grade I listed building
21 weeks
The 18th century Grade 1 listed Orangery is located within the grounds of the Royal Botanic Gardens Kew, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, Richmond, London. The Orangery sits to the north-west of the grounds, at the northern end of Broad Walk. The rear of the Orangery has a modern extension, constructed in 2003, which houses the buildings amenities. The scope was for refurbishment and conservation works to improve the condition of the external and internal building fabric, M&E services and improve the internal space. Due to the listed status the repair works were carried out in a conservative manner to preserve the historic fabric using traditional materials and techniques. The scheme improved the current decoration, lighting system and acoustic performance of the Orangery and to the corridor and wc facilities in the north extension.
External repairs included full scaffold to the building to access the roof and external walls, extensive repairs to the roof slates using Welsh slates to match, installing ridge vent system, lead repairs to the box gutters and ridges, lead repairs to the decorative lead hoppers, timber repairs both structural and decorative. Repairs to the brickwork, lime mortar pointing, lime render and pediments. The external glazing was replaced up to 1100mm with heritage style laminated glass. All previously decorated surfaces externally and internally were redecorated.
