CityAxis are proud to announce that the Royal Botanic Gardens Kew’s new Family Kitchen and Shop has achieved BREEAM Excellent certification.

The new build CLT/Glulam building, and second carbon net zero building at Kew Gardens, follows the highly successful BREEAM Outstanding Arboretum HQ project that CityAxis  delivered in May 2021.

Adjacent to the award winning ‘Children’s Garden’, the building boasts unique front of house scenic features and delivers an interactive immersive experience for visiting families that aims to educate and inspire children around the theme “What do plants need to grow?”

This new building boasts a large state-of-the-art commercial kitchen, seating for 150+ covers and an exciting retail space with bespoke creature displays.  Its sustainable design credentials  include 71 photovoltaic roof panels that generate 30 MW hours of electricity per annum, and an efficient hot water system that recaptures and recycles heat from the front of house and kitchen to deliver 80% of its total HW requirement.

CityAxis and this project have been shortlisted for the Construction News Project of the Year Award (under £20m) for the Family Kitchen and Shop, having been asked to present to the judges mid-May. CityAxis’ main stakeholders, sub-contractors and designers are all listed in the presentation credits, which will be beneficial to us all should we be fortunate enough to beat the other six finalists.

There is some stiff competition, however we think that we have every chance of winning!

The awards finals takes place in July 2022 and we look forward to the results!
